Hulu’s The Greatest Hits was a musically-inclined shoot. Duh, the movie is about songs that allow a woman (Lucy Boynton) to time travel. Writer-director Ned Benson even hosted a karaoke night with the cast and crew. “We thought it would be fun to make them sing,” he said at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles. “Austin [Crute] has the voice of an angel. He sang Frank Ocean and blew all of our minds.”

Collider: The Greatest Hits Interview - Justin Min, Austin Crute and Ned Benson

April 16, 2024

Ned Benson's (The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby) latest movie, The Greatest Hits, explores more of the writer-director's favored themes of "dealing with loss and relationships and love," in what he calls a love letter to Los Angeles. Starring the DCU's new Superman, David Corenswet, Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Justin Min (The Umbrella Academy), and Austin Crute (Booksmart), this is a romantic drama with a genre twist: Harriet (Boynton) discovers she can time travel when she hears the right song from her past. Ahead of the movie's premiere on Hulu, Collider hosted an early screening of The Greatest Hits, where Benson, Min, and Crute sat down with our own Steve Weintraub for an extended Q&A. During their conversation, Benson shares his own experience on set with Corenswet, and his reaction to finding out the actor would be donning the cape in James Gunn's (Guardians of the Galaxy) upcoming Superman. They discuss filming on location throughout LA, their favorite spots, the crucial role music played from conception to screen, and working with Quentin Tarantino's (Pulp Fiction) music consultant, Mary Ramos (Kill Bill), on the playlist.

Teen Vogue: They/Them Stars Austin Crute, Theo Germaine On the “Fun” of Horror and Making Lifelong Friends On Set

August 7, 2022

Austin Crute and Theo Germaine, stars of the new queer slasher thriller They/Them, spend about sixty full seconds gassing each other up over Zoom. “You did such a good job,” Theo says, referring to Austin’s performance in the film. “You did such a good job, get out of here,” says Austin about Theo’s take on their character.

The two actors gushing over each other confirms that their genuine — and frankly, adorable — off-screen connection mirrors their on-screen friendship. Though unfortunately, their friendship in They/Them isn’t as lighthearted. Theo and Austin’s characters are forced to become friends under grave circumstances, finding solace and protection in one another as they try to survive the horrors of a queer conversion camp.

They/Them, pronounced “they slash them” and out today on Peacock, follows a group of LGBTQ+ teens arriving at Whistler Camp, a “progressive” week-long conversion camp nestled away in the woods. Camp leader Owen Whistler (played by Kevin Bacon) promises a gentle approach, one that will help the teens find “a new sense of freedom.” Yet, with each passing day, the young campers are psychologically targeted by the camp’s counselors in attempts to manipulate and destroy their sexual and gender identities. As the psychological threats persist, a physical threat manifests: a masked killer begins to claim victims at the camp. The teens must join forces to not only make it through the week, but to make it out of Whistler Camp alive…CONTINUE TO ARTICLE

SYFY WIRE: The Director and Stars of 'They/Them' Reveal How They Found the Heart of This Horror Story

August 7, 2022

"When the casting came about, it's like when we all met each other, instantly our personalities just started gelling and we started feeding off each other," Crute said. "When all of these personalities, seven personalities, are in a place, we're all in real life developed in different ways. We have our own queer journeys and our own queer stories and our own hangups and things like that, so to kind of just talk with each other and see, 'Oh, you deal with that? That's funny that you said that, because I grew up with this and that, and just like exchanging [experiences]. I think we helped refine our characters.'" CONTINUE TO ARTICLE

Variety: ‘They/Them’ Stars On Why Queerness and Horror Are A Perfect Combination

July 31, 2022

“They/Them,” a new Blumhouse slasher that promises a queer take on the horror genre, is set to go straight to streaming on Peacock next month. But before that, the film received a full in-person theatrical screening, as the closing night premiere of Los Angeles queer film festival Outfest.

All of the cast members who play the campers in “They/Them” are queer actors, which helped them approach the material from a real place. During the premiere, Crute, who plays fun-loving camper Toby, told Variety the project spoke to him, as he struggled with a desire to conform while he was growing up.

“I’ve never set foot in a gay conversion camp, but there was a time in my life where maybe I would have given in to the pressures around me to conform,” Crute said. “I think that this movie spoke to an inner child in me that wanted to be seen, and now I feel seen, and it’s incredible.” CONTINUE TO ARTICLE

Deadline: Outfest Wraps With World Premiere Of Horror Film ‘They/Them’

July 27, 2022

The 40th edition of the Outfest LGBTQ+ film festival in Los Angeles is in the books after the closing night world premiere of Peacock’s horror film They/Them (pronounced They-Slash-Them).

Kevin Bacon and Carrie Preston star as a couple who run a Christian-oriented ‘gay conversion therapy’ camp in a remote, wooded area, preaching a contradictory philosophy of self-acceptance and what amounts to self-denial. A fresh busload of LGBT and non-binary youths show up for ‘treatment,’ most of them dispatched by their families hoping they will learn to conform to societal norms.

Bacon and his wife Kyra Sedgwick attended the premiere, along with most of the cast and filmmaker John Logan, one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters and a three-time Oscar nominee who makes his directorial debut with They/Them.

Austin Crute (Booksmart) plays Toby, a camper who’s not down with the whole gay conversion thing.

“It is so fulfilling to be a part of a film like this,” Crute said. “It’s not every day that you get to sign up for a horror movie surrounding the empowerment of queer people.” CONTINUE TO ARTICLE
